Reunion Update #8 (August 14, 2017)

Posted: 8/15/2017

Update #8

We’re coming up on three weeks until the start of the reunion!  Here’s an update on reunion events:

  1. Online registration – will end at midnight on 27 August!  If you miss the online registration window and still want to come to the reunion, you can email me at rbclyborne@gmail.com and we will get you registered.  The registration fee will go up to $100 after 27 August.  In addition, if you want to attend the tailgater the late fee will be $125 per person 12 yrs. old and up; the fee for children under 12 will remain at $40.
    a. We can’t guarantee a printed nametag or gift bag for late registrants
    b. NOTE: If you decide to just show up on Saturday for the tailgater and you did not register or pay prior to 08 September you will be charged $225 for the first tailgate admission and $145 for any additional admissions (12 yrs. old and up); children under 12 will remain at $40 per admission.  Additionally you will need to have a football game ticket to enter the tailgater.
    c. I’m receiving numerous emails asking me where the link to the registration page is or how to register.  Here’s the gouge:
    i. Please do the following to register for events at the reunion – don’t forget the registration fee – just one per family or classmate:
ii. Head out to the Alumni Association website (www.usna.com) and log in to your account.
iii. Once logged in, select the Stay Connected tab (upper left hand side) and then click on “Find Your Class”. Select our class and click on “Go”.
iv. Click on the “Events” tab and then click on the “Please click here to register” link. That will bring you to the reunion registration page.
    v. Scroll all the way to the bottom and click on the “Please click here to complete registration!” link. That will get you to where you can select events and pay.  The registration page contains the schedule of events and information regarding each event such as the link to purchase football game tickets – everyone attending the tailgater needs a ticket!
  1. Printed Name Tags – Unfortunately due to a miscommunication with our vendor, only those who have registered for the reunion prior to 11 August will receive a printed nametag (classmates – name & Lucky Bag photo; guests – name & class crest).  NOTE: There still may be a small window of opportunity while we proof the lists for the vendor so hurry and register if you want those pre-printed nametags.  We will have blank nametags at the registration check-in tables to accommodate those who didn’t register in time.  Proofs are due back to the vendor later this week.

  2. Lodging – The blocks of rooms we reserved at the hotels listed in past updates have either filled up and/or the discounted rates we negotiated have expired.  Rooms are still available at these hotels (except at the O’Callaghan) but at the regular room rate.  I would recommend calling the hotels to see what those rates are.  Here’s the information for each hotel:
    A. Doubletree Annapolis (off Riva Rd out by Annapolis Mall)
Address: 210 Holiday Court, Annapolis, Maryland 21401
Room Block – 40 rooms for Thursday (07 Sep), Friday (08 Sep) and Saturday (09 Sep)

Group Code: N82 – may not be required in online registration

    B. Crowne Plaza Annapolis (behind Fuddruckers; across from Annapolis Mall)
Address: 173 Jennifer Road, Annapolis, MD 21401
Room Block – 30 rooms for Thursday (07 Sep), Friday (08 Sep) and Saturday (09 Sep)

Room Rate – call hotel to determine room rate
Note: Parking not included in room rate; self and valet parking facilities $20-$26 per day.
    Phone Number:410-972-4300
Web address: Cut and paste in your browser – https://www.starwoodmeeting.com/events/start.action?id=1703229498&key=38BABDB7

    4. Registration Fee(s) – Several people have managed to complete the registration process without paying the registration fee.  Whether it was a system glitch or an oversight, every classmate that attends the reunion must pay the registration fee.  If your confirmation email does not show a registration fee of $82, you can go back to the registration web page, select and pay the fee and add that item to the list of other events that you are attending.  If you don’t accomplish that before 27 August, we will collect that fee at check-in.

    1. I have also received inquiries about the number of registration fees that are required.  In my last update I indicated that only one registration fee is required per classmate attending.  If you are bringing family members, friends, etc.  Only one registration fee is required (despite what the drop down list shows).  If you paid for more than one registration fee by mistake please send me an email and we will get the fee refunded to you.
    2. If your spouse is a classmate, and is planning to attend the reunion, they must pay the registration fee.  Select “2” from the drop down list when registering.  All classmates who register prior to 28 August will receive a gift bag and a printed nametag for themselves and their guests.

      5. Memorial Service
      – Many thanks to those of you who have offered to help John Vena with the memorial service on Friday, 08 September.  We appreciate the extra help!

      6. Post-Parade Reception – Just a reminder that the Post-Parade reception on Friday afternoon/evening is not a dinner and has a cash bar.  The decision to have the cash bar was made to keep costs down.  Reception runs after the P-rade until 8:00 PM.
NEW: Midshipmen in uniform who wish to attend the reception will pay the regular $30 fee at the door.  Midshipmen should have a connection to the class – son/daughter/niece/nephew/sponsor mid.  Alcohol will not be served to midshipmen.

      7. Football Game Ticket – We are using the Class of ’53 Pavilion on the North side of the stadium directly behind the lawn seats for the tailgater.  There is no direct access from outside the stadium to the Class of ’53 Pavilion.
      a. Everyone attending the tailgater must have a ticket to the football game in order to gain access to the tailgater venue.  If you do not have a ticket already, NAAA has blocked out tickets for us (420 reserved seats in Section D and 200 SRO/Lawn tickets; costs are $40 and $25 respectively).
      b. When purchasing tickets through NAAA’s website – http://ev12.evenue.ne t/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/EVExecMac ro?linkID=navy&evm=prmo&RSRC=& RDAT=&caller=PR – (you may need to cut and paste the URL into your browser) classmates should use the promo code: 1982 in order to reserve tickets with the class.  Enter the promo code AT THE BEGINNING of the purchase process.

      8. Midshipman Attendance at Tailgater – A question about midshipman attendance at the tailgater was put forward and has prompted us to adopt the following guidelines:
      a. Midshipmen in uniform will be charged $25 to attend our tailgater and should have some direct connection to the class, i.e., son, daughter, nephew, niece, sponsor mid, etc.  Note: If you are planning to invite your mid to the tailgater please send me an email so that we can add their names to the attendance list.
      b. Midshipmen will not be admitted to the tailgater until after the game has started so as not to interfere or appear to interfere with any USNA directive regarding attendance at the march over/on.
      c. Midshipmen are in a duty status until after Navy Blue & Gold.  Therefore, the catering staff will be instructed to not serve alcohol to midshipmen until after that time and only to those midshipmen with valid ID’s (21 and over).

Reunion Update #6 (July 17, 2017)

Posted: 7/22/2017

Update #6 – I hope that everyone had a safe and happy Fourth of July holiday! We are at T- 52 days and counting until the 35th reunion starts! Reunion plans are continuing to progress. To date we’ve had close to 85 registrations come in and we are working with our vendors to keep them updated on numbers for the golf outing, crab feast, post-parade reception and tailgater. Just a couple of notes regarding reunion weekend to make sure everyone is up to speed with the SOE and registration:

  • I’ve fielded a number of questions regarding the registration fee. Here’s the gouge – only one registration fee is required per classmate. If you are bringing family members/friends, only the classmate among the group is required to pay the registration fee (regardless of how many options there are in the drop-down box). Of course, if you married a classmate, your spouse will have to pay the registration fee as well.

NOTE: If you paid two or more registration fees, please send me an email. I will make sure you get a refund.

  1. Class Store – Dwayne Baptist has been working diligently with Anchor Enterprises to square away our geedunk for the reunion. Here’s a quick update from him with an important link:

Show Your Class Spirit with Class Merchandise from the Class Store!

With the reunion just a short way off, it is time to start thinking about showing your class spirit and letting Crabtown and your hometown know you are a proud member of the Class of 1982! Let people know how proud you are to be a member of 82 (SIR!) with any of the fine apparel items available at http://www.usnaclasstore.com/82store.html.

Those of you attending the reunion will receive some cool ’82 items when you arrive, including a ball cap (with the class crest this time), a couple of Navy football jersey bottle coozies, a couple of stadium cups, car decals, a nametag and USNA 82 lanyard, all in an eco-friendly ’82 insulated grocery bag. (If you register late, we cannot guarantee you will get the goodies – so please don’t register late!)

Whether or not you are attending, you are welcome to shop the Class Store and get polos, oxfords, and fleeces with the class crest. There is even an apron for you master chefs out there (Yes, I’m talking to you Paul Morrissette of the Banana Split Pie and Tom Ray of Quick Hot Brown fame!). There are also mugs, wine glasses, and other goodies.

And while you are at it, please consider joining us the weekend of 7-9 September 2017 for all of the Class Reunion activities in Annapolis, including the highlight, our class “tailgater” at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium as we watch the Mids beat Tulane (“We don’t play Notre Dame / We don’t play Tulane! We just play Holy Cross, for that’s the fearless Army way!”) There will be lots of food and fellowship. Reconnect with your roommate or that crazy Mid you remember from Steam. Your classmates are very interested in celebrating the life you have lived since graduation, so come share with us!

  1. Three deadlines are looming:
    1. First, if you want items with the class crest embroidered/embossed on them prior to the reunion, you will need to visit the class store (link above) and place your order before 23 July.   You can continue to order items with the class crest up until (and probably during and a little after) the reunion.
    2. Second, we are placing Lucky Bag photos of each classmate who registers on their individual nametags. If you want that official picture-printed nametag, you need to register for the reunion prior to 11 August. If you register after 11 August, you will get a nametag with only your name printed on it. No one who registers after 27 August (deadline for online registration) will receive a printed nametag; we will have paper nametags available at the registration check-in tables to accommodate you. Of course, if you still have the 30th reunion nametags, those will work just fine!
    3. Third – Lodging – there are still plenty of rooms available at the hotels we have contracted with for reunion weekend.       Please refer to previous reunion emails to get the contact information and reservation links.       NOTE: In order to avoid financial penalties resulting from the reservation agreement we signed with these hotels we may have to release rooms back to the hotels in the next few weeks. If you are in need of a place to stay for the reunion, please consider the hotels (Westin/Doubletree/Crowne Plaza) where we have negotiated discounted rates. In any case, we will lose the discounted rate on the Crowne Plaza after 27 July and the other hotels will release rooms after 07/08 August.
  2. Memorial Service – I wanted to let everyone know that John Vena has stepped forward to coordinate the Memorial Service scheduled for 10:00 AM on Friday, 08 September.       In addition, Debbie Moberger Cipoletti has agreed to serve as the officiant for the service. Thanks John and Debbie! If you would like to participate in the service by doing a reading or helping to set-up the morning of, please shoot me an email and I will get it to John.

NOTE: Widows/widowers and families of fallen classmates please contact me (see below) for special registration information if you are interested in attending any of the events during the reunion. John will be sending out a letter formally inviting you to the Memorial Service in the next few weeks. If you want to verify that your loved one is included in the service, please check the “In Memoriam” tab on the class website – sometimes our information is slow in updating. If for some reason there is a discrepancy, please contact me directly.

  1. Information regarding the reunion is constantly being updated and pushed out via email and social media. Please check the AA class website (http://1982.usnaclasses.net), Facebook and your email for the latest and greatest! We even have a Twitter handle (@Luckybag1982) and will be using it to update reunion information all the way through the reunion weekend. There’s already a tweet out there about the class reunion store! You have to follow that handle if you want the updates!

Reunion Update #4 (5/31/17)

Posted: 6/3/2017

From Rich Clybourne:

I apologize for the long gap in providing an update to the reunion. This reunion thing has a lot of moving pieces and the committee and I have been trying to put them all together to give you a better picture of the scheduled events and the associated costs for reunion weekend. Here goes:

  1. Need Coordinator – We are looking for someone to take on the role of coordinator for the class memorial service on Friday of the reunion weekend. This can be done remotely (from outside the Annapolis area) through phone calls and emails. This event is a key part of reunion weekend and those who have attended in the past have commented on the importance of keeping these classmates in our hearts and minds. It is an opportunity to honor our fallen classmates and their families and to recognize the sacrifice that they made for our class, our school, and our country. If you are interested, please send me an email at rbclyborne@gmail.com or call me at 410-703-3138 (mobile) or 410-975-9077 (home).
  2. Registration Website – I know people are getting tired of hearing that the site will be going live in the next couple of weeks but unfortunately that’s where we still are. Technical difficulties with the Alumni Association’s online registration process have caused us to go to an outside vendor to handle online registration for the reunion. Dan Proulx is working with that vendor to get us up and running as soon as possible but it may take until mid-June to get that done. Please bear with us. Jane will be sending out a link via email when the site goes live which we are striving to make happen a soon as possible.

Online registration will end at midnight on 27 August. If you miss the online registration window and still want to come to the reunion you can email me at rbclyborne@gmail.com and we will get you registered. The late registration fee will go up to $100 after 27 August. Also if you want to attend the tailgater the late fee will be $125 per person 12 yrs.old and up; the fee for children under 12 will remain at $40.

NOTE: If you decide to just show up on Saturday for the tailgater and you did not register prior to 08 September you will be charged $225 for the first tailgate admission and $145 for any additional admissions (12 yrs. old and up); children under 12 will remain at $40 per admission. Additionally you will have to have a football game ticket to enter the tailgater.

NOTE: In lieu of having the website up I am re-sending most of the information contained in previous updates with more current information (times, venues, costs, etc.) so that you can be better prepared with your choices once we do have the website available for registration.

3.  Reunion check-in will be handled by a group employed by Brian Caldwell (’95). Check-in will occur at Ogle Hall (the Alumni Association house) on King George St. from 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM on Thursday, 07 September and Friday, 08 September and at the Crab Feast and Post-Parade Reception. There will be no registration at the tailgater on Saturday, 09 September, only tailgater payment will be accepted. If you registered online and the first event you can attend is the tailgater, your geedunk bag will be at the tailgate check in table.

4.  You will be required to check in for each event – Please bring your email confirmation listing the events or wristband (still working those details) for those events of which you have registered to check-in at Ogle Hall and to each of the events in case there is a discrepancy. Brian Caldwell’s group will be handling check-ins at all the reunion events for the weekend. A member of the reunion committee will be at each event to handle any questions/discrepancies.

5.  Lodging – the hotels listed in the previous updates are still taking reservations the only hotel that is “sold out” is the O’Callaghan and they do not have any more capacity for the reunion weekend. If demand dictates, we will add room blocks as the remaining hotels capacity allow. That information will be communicated on an as needed basis.        Here is the list again:
