Update #12 – 40th Reunion – Final Gouge

From Rich Clyborne: Reunion Update 10/22/2022- Less than one week until the 40th begins! We have over 500 classmates registered and nearly 1,000 classmates, and guests combined! It’s going to be a BIG party! Registration and the 40th reunion schedule is at https://www.signupnow.events Still have a few updates to make on the website, but the “TBD” and some other time schedule updates listed below are current.
Please read all the following entries:

1.    Online registration will remain open through reunion weekend! – Registration fee will be $100 from this point forward; the Post Parade reception will also be $100, and the Tailgater Fee will be $250 (until Saturday of reunion weekend – see note below). There may not be geedunk bags available for late registrants as we had to give the vendor our numbers prior to the publishing of this update.
NOTE: If you decide to show up on Saturday for the tailgater and you did not register or pay prior to 29 October, you will be charged $350 for all tailgate admissions; children under 12 will remain at $40 per admission. Additionally, you must have a football game ticket to enter the tailgater. There will be no cash or check transactions at the reunion. All registrations and events must be paid for by credit card through the registration website. https://www.signupnow.events

2.    Reunion Check-In – check in is scheduled for the Historic Inns of Annapolis (HIOA) “Maryland Inn” site at 16 Church Circle in the Crown & Crab room located on the lower level near the bar of the Maryland Inn from 1200 – 1800 on Thursday and 0900 – 1800 on Friday (27/28 October).  We will also be conducting check-in on Saturday at the stadium (1300 – Halftime). Geedunk bags will be distributed at check-in at the Maryland Inn location only, and you can confirm which events you have registered for at the tables.

3.    Name Tags – All classmates and guests who completed online registration prior to 10/20/22 will receive nametags and lanyards at check-in. Classmate nametags will have your name and Lucky Bag photo; guests – name and class crest. If you registered after the 20th there will be blank nametags and a sharpie available at check-in.
a.    NOTE: Each nametag will also carry icons that represent the events that you paid for at registration. Besides your registration fee, the events that require payment are the Arrival Coffee, Yard Tours and golf outing on Thursday, the Post Parade Reception on Friday, and the Tailgater on Saturday.  Your nametag will constitute your admission pass to all those events except the ones on Thursday. Make sure you have your nametag with you throughout the weekend!
b.    Thursday events – a registration list will be present for the Arrival Coffee and Yard Tours. A reunion committee member will be present to check you in for those events only (reunion check-in will take place as stated above). Rick Stein who is coordinating the golf outing will check in the golfers at the USNA golf course on Thursday afternoon.

4.    Reunion Photographer – Jim Garman (’82) will be taking pictures during the reunion weekend. Look to him for taking company and small group photos at events. He will post pictures (details to follow) after the weekend.

5.    Hopper Hall Tours – look for more information in the coming week.

6.    Glenn Snyder’s Inurnment – will take place at the Columbarium (located along College Creek next to left of the footbridge that leads to Hospital Point) at 1400 on Thursday.  If you’re on the Yard, please come and support Glenn’s wife Betsy and her family. This is an outdoor facility with a small, covered area for the service.

7.    Memorial Service – Contrary to what you may have heard or remember from the 35th, the Memorial Service will take place in Memorial Hall from 1000 – 1100 on Friday 10/28.
a.    Memorial Hall is in Bancroft Hall (remember your yard gouge?) at the top of the steps leading up from the Rotunda. As of today, we have over 500 people signed up to attend the service but there will only be seating for 275. Standing room is available for those not able to find a seat.
b.    We need to start promptly at 1000; please be in Memorial Hall prior to 0950.
c.    There will be a section in the seating area roped off for spouses and loved ones of our fallen classmates.
d.    We will be followed by another reunion memorial service at 1100 so when our service has concluded please exit Memorial Hall and assemble on the step in front of Bancroft Hall as quickly as possible for a class picture taken by a drone operated by USNA personnel – arrangements courtesy of Jeff Voight! Even if you don’t attend the service you are invited to participate in the photo. Estimated snap time is between 1100 and 1115.
e.    Please watch https://www.youtube.com when you get a few minutes and some Kleenex. You can also search youtube with “USNA 1982 memorial service”. Thank you John Vena and Jeff Voight!

8.    Class Meeting – will take place immediately after the class picture following the Memorial Service in Rickover 102, 1130 – 1230.  Come hear about all of the great things that the class has been doing and plans to do!

9.    Superintendent’s Briefing – will take place from 1350 – 1500 on Friday in Mahan Hall – Capacity of 800 – First come, first served.

10.   Formal Parade – will take place at 1600 on Friday at Worden Field.  There will be a section for the class roped off in the bleachers – look for the Class of 1982 sign.

11.    Post-Parade Reception – The Post-Parade reception will be held at the Jack C. Taylor Conference Center in Beach Hall on Hospital Point (in part of the old hospital). This is a new event venue built by the U.S. Naval Institute.  Here’s a link with information about the conference center: The Jack C. Taylor Conference Center | USNI (jackctaylorconferencecenter.org. The reception takes place on Friday from 1700 – 2100.  REMINDER: This is not a dinner. There will be Heavy hors d’oeuvres and cash bar.

12.    Parking – most of you know that parking on the Yard and in Annapolis can be a problem.  Even in 1982 it was a problem – now imagine 40 years of growth and security restrictions, Homecoming, a football weekend – I think you get the picture! Here’s the latest gouge:
a.    Yard Parking – Vehicle access and parking on the Yard is extremely limited especially on Homecoming Weekend. Only drivers with a valid DOD ID are permitted to drive and park on the Yard.  Gate 1 (by Halsey Field House) and Gate 8 (out by the baseball field) are the only gates that will be open for vehicle access.  Each occupant over the age of 18 must have a valid Real ID in order to gain access.  Reserved parking is clearly marked and strictly enforced.  Additionally, there is no parking on roads or sections of roads that have red curbs.
b.    Handicapped – If you have valid handicapped license plates or a dashboard or rear-view mirror hanger/placard you may drive and park on the Yard. You must enter through Gate 8 and the driver must have a valid Real ID compliant driver’s license.  All occupants over the age of 18 must have valid ID’s as well.
c.    Off-Yard Parking – Here is a link to the Annapolis Parking website: The Official Annapolis Parking Guide | City of Annapolis, Maryland (MD) Parking Guide.  The site provides locations, maps, and parking fee information for parking lots and paid on-street parking areas that are available.  NOTE: The Hillman Garage located off Main Street and used by many when visiting downtown is closed for renovations.
d.    Free Shuttle – Annapolis runs a free shuttle bus service from the parking lots around the city to downtown and other key destinations. You can find information including a route map and times of operation at the parking link above. Wheelchair lifts and bike racks are available on the buses.
e.    Stadium – Unless you have season tickets or a stadium parking pass you will not be able to park in the NMCMS lots. Many of the communities surrounding the stadium offer parking for a fee on a first come – first served basis.  Fees vary and are typically cash only.

13.    Tailgater – We are using the Class of ’53 Pavilion on the Northeast side of the stadium directly behind the lawn seats for the tailgater. Vice any other word you may have read or heard, everyone who is attending Saturday’s tailgater must enter through Gate J – located to the right of the words “Class Ring Northeast” (upper right-hand corner) on the attached diagram.
a.    Football Game Ticket – Everyone attending the tailgater must have a ticket to the football game to gain access to the tailgater venue. If you do not have a ticket already, NAAA has blocked out tickets for us – reserved seats in Section 25, Costs are $50.
b. When purchasing tickets through NAAA’s website Navy Sports | Online Ticket Office | Promotions (evenue.net) – classmates should use the promo code: 1982 in order to reserve tickets with the class. Enter the promo code AT THE BEGINNING of the purchase process.
b.    IMPORTANT: These will be E-tickets.  You will need to download them to your cell phone and show the QR code to the gate attendant for entry to the stadium. Please download football tickets before you enter the stadium, cell service is in demand. There is a one clear bag policy. Leave your midstore bags away from the stadium.

14.    Company/Team/Club Get-Togethers – check the class website for information on these gatherings. Some are scheduled for Thursday evening, Friday evening and Sunday. Email Rett Rasmussen at Rett@Rasmussen.biz if you want your gathering location, time, and contact gouge added to the class website.

15.    Saturday and Sunday Morning Events
a.    PLEASE NOTE: We will not be holding a Community Service event on Saturday morning
b.    Old Goat Run – Show up for an impromptu ’82 run (2, 3, or 4 miles) at Halsey at 0800 on Saturday, 10/29/2022. Issue Blue Rim T-shirts are mandatory. Jerry McEnerney has sent an email to all who signed up with instructions.  If you didn’t sign up at registration and want to show up and run, please contact Jerry at: jxmcenerney@gmail.com to let him know or for any questions.
c.    ’82 Bike Ride – Mark Converse is coordinating a bike ride on the rail trail that starts at the entrance to the Annapolis-BWI trail head on Sunday morning.  Mark can provide directions.  He has sent an email to those who signed up at registration.  If you didn’t sign up but want to participate, please contact him at: converse@cypressintl.com.  The ride will start at 0800.

40th Reunion – Update #9 – Registration Gouge

Message From Your Reunion Coordinator

Greetings ’82!  I know it’s been a frustrating wait for information regarding the reunion and for that the committee and I want you to know that we understand and have been working tirelessly behind the scenes trying to finalize events, venues, pricing, etc.  This time around it hasn’t been easy.  A lot has changed in Annapolis since our 35th and COVID did not help.  Lodging, catering, venue rentals, etc., have become more complicated and very expensive and the committee and I have attempted to simplify the process and keep your costs down as much as possible.  Using past reunion attendance numbers and factoring in Alumni Association data we tried to develop an SOE that included the traditional reunion events and maximized the time you have with friends, roommates, teammates, etc.  In any case we are ready to send out the link to the online registration site.  You’ll find it below but before you click on that link there are a couple things that you should know:

  1. Schedule of Events – we will have most of our traditional events for the reunion with one big exception. We will not have a Crab Feast this time around.  Venues for an event such as this are hard to come by and Mike’s on South River is no longer doing large group reservations.  Thursday evening will be an open time slot for companies, sports teams, ECA’s and other groups to gather and share sea stories.  Please check with classmates in your companies, teams and ECA’s to see if anything is planned.  Friday evening’s schedule will be a repeat of Thursday.

We added a few new events to accommodate early arrivals and late leavers.  Thursday morning, we will have an Arrival Coffee at the Naval Academy Club (the old O-Club) and an opportunity to take a tour of the Yard – a lot has changed since 26 May 1982 and if you haven’t been back for a while, you might enjoy seeing all the new or renovated buildings and structures.  We will also have an opportunity to tour the new cyber defense building – Hopper Hall – on Thursday afternoon as well.  On Saturday morning we will do our requisite/mandatory/optional 5-yr PRT running/walking event (known better as the Old Goat Run) and Sunday morning we will be holding a class bike ride on the B&A Trail the entrance to which is located just up the road from the Severn River bridge.  We are also attempting to set up a community service project with the Midshipman Action Group on Saturday morning.  You’ll find more details at the class website and on the registration site.  If you plan on participating in any of these events, make sure you roger-up for them when you register – it will help us with numbers.

On a more somber note, we have added the inurnment of our classmate Glenn Snyder to the SOE.  This ceremony will take place from 2:00 – 3:00 PM on Thursday at the Columbarium adjacent to the Naval Academy Cemetery on Hospital Point. Please consider paying your respects and supporting Glenn’s family by attending if you are in the area.

  1. Spouses and loved ones of our deceased classmates: Please email me (rbclyborne@gmail.com) or call me (410-703-3138) if you would like to attend the reunion.  We will have a special registration process in place to assist you.
  1. Registration: Several items before you head out to the website:
  1. We are using a vendor approved by the Alumni Association called SignUpNow. SignUpNow is owned by Evan Barnet USNA ’91.  They have done all of the reunions over the past two years and from what we can tell they will do a great job for us.
  2. You will have to create an account when you register. This will allow you to return to the site to make changes (if needed) to the events that you want to attend or add guests after you register.  You will also be able to see “Shout Outs” from fellow classmates, attendee numbers by company and we will also place updates or changes to events on the site along with the class website.  There is a lot of good information on the site including a FAQ section.  If you have any problems with registering, please let me know.
  3. Only classmates will be charged the registration fee of $82. Adding guests will not increase your registration fee even after you register.  For those of you who have family members attending USNA or if you are a sponsor and want your sponsored midshipmen to attend the tailgater – you can add them as guests when you register.  These midshipmen will need to follow all USNA regulations while attending the tailgater.
  4. Some events do not have a fee associated with them – Old Goat Run, Bike Ride, Memorial Service, Hopper Hall tour, etc. We encourage you to register for these events to give us a better idea of the number of people planning on attending.
  5. Early online registration will end on 13 October (two weeks out from the reunion). After the 13th the registration fee will go up to $100, the Post-Parade Reception fee will go up to $100 per person and the Tailgater fee will go up to $200 per person.  PLEASE NOTE: If you show up at the tailgater on Saturday and you did not register through the registration website prior to that date (10/29) the fee to enter the tailgater will be $350 per person and does not include the football game ticket fee.  You must have a football game ticket to attend the tailgater – no exceptions.
  6. Deadline for registering for having printed nametags is 01 October. If you have not registered before then you most likely will not receive a nametag in your geedunk bag at registration.
  7. Golf Registration: We only have 16 spots available at the USNA Golf Course on Thursday afternoon. We will be sharing the course with the Class of 1972.  There will be a waiting list created in case our 16 slots increase.
  1. Reunion Check-In: Reunion check-in will take place at the Historic Inns of Annapolis at 16 Church Circle in Annapolis. We will be using the Crown & Crab Room.  Check-In hours will be – Thursday 1200 – 1800; Friday 0900 – 1800; Saturday 1300 – Halftime.  We will put out parking information for HIA if any will be available.

For those who will go to the Naval Academy Club (NAC) between 0800 – 1200 on Thursday, 27 October for coffee and/or tours, please check in at NAC for those two specific events with ’82 reunion staff. After 1200, check in for the 40th reunion at the Crown & Crab room at 16 Church Circle.

  1. REMINDER: You will need a ticket to the football game to attend the tailgater (no exceptions). Tickets can be purchased at Navy Sports | Online Ticket Office | Promotions (evenue.net).  Use the Promo Code of 1982.
  1. Here’s the registration website link: Class of 1982 40th Reunion Registration

That’s it for now.  Please keep watch on your email inbox for updates from Rett Rasmussen our Reunion Communications Director.  If you have any questions about any reunion related item, please shoot me an email or give me a call.  The committee and I are excited about seeing everyone in October and we are continuing to work to make your experience a memorable one.  Thanks for your patience!
