Gneiser, David Charles – – 8/24/05 My wife Lorrie & I dated off and on during the 4 years at USNA. We got married 2 days after graduation in Wisconsin and then 7 days later went to Pennsylvania for Jan Myers’ wedding (29th Co.). Jan was also in our wedding—quite the road trips that week for all of us. I am more in love with Lorrie than anytime in our marriage. She is such a blessing.
We reported to Orlando for Nuclear Power School in July 1982. I had about 3 weeks off before school started so I either windsurfed or watched MTV each day! We then went to “our own private Idaho” for nuclear prototype training. Quite the experiences, riding the bus to & from the training site every day, learning how to fly-fish, and exploring Yellowstone, especially in the winter on snowmobiles!
Then it was off to Sub School for the Basic Officers course for 3 months—a nice break to spend fall in New England after all of that nuclear power training. We served on USS Ray (SSN-653) out of Charleston, SC from December 1983 to January 1987. Was OOD for the historic surfacing of three U.S. submarines (Ray, Hawkbill, & Archerfish) at the North Pole on 6 May 1986. It was a beautiful 13-hour day that we spent at the Pole with light winds and temps in the 20’s; we played Frisbee and explored the ice around the boats, visiting with the other crews. Had a KC-130 from Thule, Greenland do a fly-over and mail-drop.
Back to Sub School to served as an instructor from February 1987 to February 1989. Taught submarine officers and enlisted over-the-horizon targeting (OTH-T) of Tomahawks. Transferred from active duty to the Reserves on 1 February 1989. Transferred to Inactive Reserve status in November 1994 and resigned on 1 January 2001.
Came back to our family business in early 1989 (Fond du Lac Bumper Exchange) thinking that I knew something about business from all of my experiences in the Navy—did I find out quickly that I didn’t know too much at all! Enrolled at the University of Wisconsin in Oshkosh in their MBA program to learn business; only made it 1/3-way through their program and decided to “take a break for a semester”—never finished the program! But did “earn my PhD in business” through all that we’ve learned and experienced running this company.
Been challenged and grown as a businessman since taking over the company from my Dad in 1994. See our website @ www.fdlbumper.com for information on our company and its history. Lorrie was very instrumental in taking all of the things that she heard me talking about since 1989 concerning the business and putting it in writing. Our mission, values, and vision are updated to reflect how we believe God has led us to steward this business. Our website is also in the process of being updated.
We have a son Drew approaching 21, is a junior studying business at Northwestern College in St. Paul, self-taught on the guitar (owns a Les Paul Gibson), surfs way too much on the Net, and loves to snowboard. He has worked for us the last 3 summers—“income redistribution” according to the accountant. Drew oversaw bar-coding our warehouse last summer and setting up the racking in our new location in Wausau, WI this summer.
Sarah is 18 and is a freshman at Cedarville University in Cedarville, OH, studying nursing. She is quite an artist (won best of show for 5 high schools for a self-portrait), cheerleader, very creative.
Emily is 15, loves gymnastics and cheerleading, and has a natural “business sense”—she might be the one that takes over the business as 4th generation.
I’ve been active with Promise Keepers for about 10 years. It has positively affected our marriage, my roles as a father, brother, and son, and definitely made me understand that I need men in my life that will hold me accountable. It’s been a blessing to volunteer with Drew at conferences nearly every year since 1998.
Had a blast with Dennis & Donna O’Meara at last year’s Army-Navy game. It had been 25 years since our wives roomed together for a game during our 2nd Class year. Enclosed is a picture of us pre-game as well as President Bush waving to our wives when he crossed over to Navy’s side for the 2nd half!
If any classmate ever wants to go to an EAA Fly-In at Oshkosh, let me know. Will get you passes and you’d have a place to stay with us.
I also offer USNA grads a deal on step bumpers (and some automotive accessories) that I think they will not find anywhere in the country. Contact me via email (dcg@fdlbumper.com) to let me know the year & model of their vehicle and the parts.

Murray, David Thomas–1/15/2007–went home to South Jersey to work at the Aegis CSED site awaiting Nuclear Power School in December following graduation. While in New Jersey, I married Lynn, whom I had been dating since before USNA.
Following training, I served on USS Alexander Hamilton in Groton and Holy Loch. Next I served in NAVSEA in Crystal City in Trident Command and Control Systems. I got a civilian job with RCA (now Lockheed Martin) in Moorestown NJ in 1989 doing System Safety Engineering and Electromagnetic Effects Management for the Aegis program in the US and abroad. I served 5 years in the reserves in Naval Control of Shipping.
In 2000, we moved to Yorktown, Virginia to work on the CVN-77 to manage the Specialty Engineering Team for the Integrated Warfare System. The Navy decided they didn’t want to change their carrier warfare systems, and so I led our newly-formed Lockheed Martin office as we turned our attention to other projects.
I presently coordinate Maritime Systems and Sensors (MS2) efforts at the Lockheed Martin Center for Innovation in Suffolk, Va. It’s a really cool job, working with all the latest technology from across the industry.
My son has recently graduated (Dec 2006) from Virginia Tech with a Bachelors in Theater Arts, and my daughter will graduate from York High in June 2007, and is lined up to go to the University of New Orleans to major in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering on a Chancellor’s Scholarship.
